The University of St. Thomas
SYI partnered with the University of St. Thomas professors and senior
engineering and communications students for the purpose of creating
a mixer for the kneading process of shea butter production, and
to visually document the lives of rural producers. SYI's President,
Rahama Wright, traveled with 4 teams (totaling 17 participants)
from the University of St. Thomas to Mali, last March, in order
to facilitate meetings and conduct prototype testing in our pilot
village Dio. The trip was a huge success. The engineering students
were able to work directly with the women to redesign the mixer
prototype and it worked!
The communications students were able to talk directly with the
women and gather enough footage to produce video clips that will
be used to encourage women to form their own cooperatives. These
clips will be aired in Mali through a USAID funded CLIC (Community
Learning and Information Centers) program which was created to "provide
vital resources for Malian communities to gain access to information
and communication tools and content such as political news, health
information, agribusiness resources and market information". We
thank all the students and professors who worked on the 10 day project.
